Following the recent EFFA FlavorDays held in Brussels, London & Copenhagen, the European Flavour & Fragrance Association (EFFA) has released a promotional video from the first session.

After his Bill Littlejohn Memorial lecture entitled 'Formula for a Flavourist' delivered on Thursday 5th October, Givaudan's Geoff Marshall-Hill became the latest in a distinguished line of recipients of the Bill Littlejohn Memorial medallion.

As is customary, Geoff was presented the award by BSF President Paul Filby immediately after completing his lecture, the final item on the BSF 2017 Symposium programme.

The Society has just received the following sad news from member Andrew Fellowes:

It is with great sadness that we announce that John Yarwood sadly passed away last week after a long battle with illness.

John had reached and held the position of Sales Director at F.D Copeland for many years, retiring in June 2003. He previously had other successful careers at The Rayner Essence Group and The Duckworth Group.

He was a very active member of The BEOA and was on Council of the British Society of Flavourists for a number of years being very involved in the Gala Night. Apart from being a respected business man he was just as well know for being an entertainer, a member of The Magic Circle and someone with an amazing memory - often holding an audience's attention, post function for hours.

He leaves behind children, Danny and Sally and a number of successful grandchildren and will be sorely missed.

John's funeral is on Saturday 30th September at 11 am at Ripley Paris Church near Harrogate.

Giract have announced the 8th edition of their European PhD Flavor Research Awards Programme, and are calling for applications. Up for grabs are 6 first year bursaries and 1 best thesis prize.

"The programme is open to students in the academic year 2017-18 across all universities in Europe. The programme and its unique awards addresses students about to embark on a PhD research as well as those who have already chosen flavor research as their subject. This 8th edition is also organised by Giract and co-ordinated by Prof. Andy Taylor from the University of Nottingham, UK."

The project targets two different groups of PhD students:

  • Group 1:  students who are about to complete their PhD and hence will soon be examining opportunities for employment
  • Group 2:  students who are about to commence their PhD studies

Keep an eye out as we extend the features we are able to provide. More of our event-based content will be available on-line, and we plan to explore the provision of webcasting of lectures. There will also be a bulletin board for industry opportunities.
